The Miami Dolphins finished the 2017 season with a 6-10 record, failing to improve on their 2016 campaign which ended with a 10-6 record and a trip to the playoffs.
Last season, the Dolphins had an excuse for missing the playoffs, which was the season-ending injury suffered by quarterback Ryan Tannehill, who ended up being replaced by Jay Cutler, who had to be coaxed out of retirement by the Dolphins.
Despite their disappointing 2017 campaign, the Dolphins believe they will be able to make it back to the playoffs this season with a healthy Tannehill under center, which will be impressive considering how much roster turnover they had during the offseason. The Dolphins are strong underdogs to win Super Bowl 53 and here is why.
The Dolphins released their best defensive lineman, Ndamukong Suh. Additionaly, center Mike Pouncey and wide receiver Jarvis Landry, who was traded to the Cleveland Browns for some draft picks. Even though the Dolphins saved some money with those moves and will have a lot of cap space next summer, some are wondering if the team really expects to win a lot of games this season.

Miami added Albert Wilson to replace Landry. Also, Danny Amendola to provide some depth at the receiver position. Both receivers played well last season, but neither was a top option on their respective teams, so it is going to be interesting to see how they adjust to their new roles.
Despite the turnover on both sides of the ball. Head coach Adam Gase is confident that the Dolphins will be competitive this season.
“The way I see it right now is we’ve added the pieces that really go with the group we already have,” Gase said. “Obviously when you have the players that have left, the caliber of players and guys that have had the production that they’ve had, we know you’re not going to replace one guy with one guy. We understand that.
Even though Gase is optimistic about their chances this season. The Dolphins will have their work cut out for them.
